During my week teaching in Rostock, I took the time to eat at as many places that offered vegan food as I could find. At the beginning of my week there, it didn’t seem like there were many, but the more I explored, the more establishments seemed to advertise the fact that they served vegan food. Here are my top picks for vegan Rostock.

Rostock Vegan Restaurants
Bensel & Gretels
A cute café just off Doberanerplatz, this place serves light meals and snacks, ice cream, and all the drinks you expect plus a small selection of wine. There seems to be a vegan dish of the day each day, plus several sandwiches and bagels are vegan and marked as such.
A couple of cakes may be vegan, but they are not marked, so be sure to ask. They also have a range of vegan ice cream.
There is also reliable wifi, and they are open till 9pm on weekdays, and longer at weekends, making this a lovely place for a lunch, an afternoon snack, a pre cinema drink (the independent cinema is next door) or a cheeky late night slice of cake.
This cake, along with a soy chai latte and rounding up for a tip, cost a very reasonable €5.

Vegangster
Rostock’s only 100% vegan eatery, which only opened in January 2014, offers burgers, vöner (vegan döner), chips and a couple of other hot dishes. It’s the perfect option when you’ve got a craving for vegan fast food.
The location, in the student area of town, is small with limited seating and the tattooed staff may be a bit chaotic, but are definitely friendly.
There are also hot drinks and vegan cakes which are rich, decadent and delicious. The meal I had (burger, cake and tea) set me back €11.50.

Café Heumond
The main menu at this place, which changes weekly, features a handful of vegan options which are all clearly marked. Regular vegan features seem to be falafel, soup and curry. I had the roasted Canarian potatoes with three vegan dips and a beautifully presented salad for lunch and left very satisfied. For this and a (non-alcoholic) drink plus tip, I paid €13.50.
The seating area is on the lower ground floor, so partly submerged below the street and the atmosphere is gentrified, relaxed and cosy. I would highly recommend this as a place to read the newspaper or a book over a coffee and light meal on a rainy afternoon.

Holy Pizza
About half the pizzas at this place are available vegan and are marked on the menu with a blue dot. They are thin crusted, tasty and generously sized, and cost between €6 and €9 each.
They also serve a couple of raw vegan cakes. The one I had (chocolate and banana) was comforting and not overly sweet and at just €1.90 a slice, totally reasonable.
Oh, and don’t worry: the animal heads on the wall are fake!

Mühlen Backerei
This chain of bakeries found only in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has several branches and concessions in Rostock, but this bright welcoming place on Doberanerplatz probably has the widest range of vegan goodies.
Products are not marked specifically as vegan, but the friendly staff were all too happy to let me know what was vegan and recommend something based on my tastes.

Recommended Hotels in Rostock
I've stayed more than once in Rostock for work, and always in the Greifennest Hotel and I highly recommend it. It's central enough that you can walk everywhere, but it's still in a quiet location. The rooms are bright and spacious, the wifi is reliable, the breakfast is amazing and best of all there's lots of cosy communal space where you can hang out and work or just relax. Plus, you can use the kitchen!

There are many sites for apartment rentals in Rostock, with AirBnB probably being one of the most popular. Prices are generally comparable to budget hotels, especially if you’re willing to get a room in a shared apartment. Book AirBnB →

This is so useful, it’s not always easy to find vegan places to eat when in a new place. That vegan cinnamon, walnut and apple ice cream looks superb, I think it would be the first place I’d go if I was in Rostock 🙂
After eating it there, I actually found that brand (“Peacocks”) of ice-cream at several places in Rostock, which was a nice surprise.
Wow, I’m happy to see a lot of vegan options. How is the ice cream? I find the vegan ice cream near me all tastes like coconut lol
It didn’t taste like coconut. It wasn’t super creamy, but it was pleasant. I’m guessing it would have been even better on a warm, summer’s day. I ate this on a cold day in autumn, though!
Woww… I just moved to Rostock from India and I was wondering where would I find anything vegan.. Thank you so much for this write up!
Will definitely try out all the above mentioned places and post my reviews for maximum number of dishes I can 🙂
That’s great! I’m so glad to help out. Do let me know if you find any of this information has changed or if you discover any new places! Enjoy Rostock!
